Common Questions About NHSS Fencing Services

What is NHSS 2A and 2C?
They are the National Highways Sector Schemes covering fencing and barrier installation on the strategic road network. 2A covers permanent and temporary vehicle restraint systems, and 2C covers environmental barriers including acoustic and noise attenuation fencing. Both are independently audited.
What fence types are covered under your accreditation?
Boundary fencing to BS1722 Parts 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 and 11, covering chain link, wire mesh, chestnut pale, close boarded, post and rail and wood panel. Also post and panel concrete fencing, BS EN 12839 precast concrete products, wildlife fencing to CIRIA C646, gates, stiles and ancillary structures, and structural and acoustic environmental barriers.
Do you install vehicle restraint systems?
Yes, under Scheme 2A, covering both permanent and temporary systems. Restraint performance depends on installation matching the tested configuration exactly, so this work is carried out by operatives with the manufacturer and system-specific training for the product being installed.
Can you deliver wildlife and exclusion fencing on a highways scheme?
Yes. Wildlife fencing is designed and installed to CIRIA C646. On schemes carrying protected species obligations the fence line usually forms part of the ecological mitigation, so it is installed to the licence conditions and inspected accordingly rather than treated as a standard boundary.
Can you respond to barrier strikes and emergency fencing repairs?
Yes. We respond to vehicle strikes on restraint systems, storm damage to boundary and acoustic fencing, and boundary breaches beside live carriageway. Teams can be mobilised at short notice from whichever of our five offices is closest, making safe first and programming the permanent repair after.
