Design, Materials and Construction

Every project begins with a detailed site assessment covering topography, soil type, drainage, ecological constraints, accessibility requirements and expected usage. This assessment determines alignment, width, surface type and the structural approach needed for the route.

We work with a range of surface options to suit different environments and use cases. These include permeable bound surfaces for high-traffic routes, compacted gravel for informal trails and forest roads, and sustainably sourced timber or composite boards for wet or ecologically sensitive areas. Structural design addresses anticipated loadings, ground movement and longevity through appropriate sub-base preparation, geotextiles, piling or elevated frames.

Accessibility is integral to every design. We incorporate appropriate gradients, non-slip finishes, edge protection, tactile indicators and compliant ramps so that routes are inclusive and safe for all users. Where sites present particular challenges, our teams use ultra-low ground pressure machinery and, where required, helicopter delivery to minimise disturbance and protect the surrounding environment.

Common Questions About Footpaths and Boardwalks

What materials do you use for boardwalks?
We use sustainably sourced timber, composite boards and, where appropriate, recycled plastic decking. Material selection is guided by the site environment, expected footfall, durability requirements and ecological sensitivity. All timber is sourced from certified sustainable suppliers.
Can you work on ecologically sensitive sites?
Yes. We regularly deliver projects in SSSIs, nature reserves and other protected landscapes. Our construction methods are designed to minimise ground disturbance, prevent pollution and preserve existing flora and fauna. We work closely with ecologists and site managers to ensure compliance with all relevant environmental requirements.
How do you handle wet or boggy ground?
For wet or waterlogged ground, we typically use elevated boardwalk structures supported by piling or floating foundations. This approach avoids compaction and root damage, maintains natural hydrology and provides a durable, level walking surface. Drainage and crossfall detailing prevent water pooling on the finished surface.
Do you provide DDA-compliant designs?
Yes. Accessibility is considered from the earliest design stage. We incorporate appropriate gradients, non-slip surfaces, edge protection, tactile indicators and compliant ramps to ensure routes meet the requirements of the Equality Act and relevant access standards.
What maintenance is needed for footpaths and boardwalks?
Regular maintenance extends the life of any installation. Typical tasks include surface repairs, clearing debris and vegetation, checking and tightening fixings and inspecting structural elements. We provide tailored maintenance plans and can carry out scheduled visits to keep your routes safe and in good condition.
